Latest Express Entry Draws: What You Need to Know

This week, Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has made headlines by issuing 1,000 Invitations to Apply (ITAs) in a recent draw targeting French-speaking candidates. With a minimum Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score of 444, this draw marks a significant opportunity for eligible candidates.

But that’s not all! Earlier in the week, IRCC invited 1,613 candidates with Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) nominations, who needed a higher minimum score of 743. On October 9, another draw welcomed 500 candidates from the Canadian Experience Class (CEC), requiring a score of 539.

A Trend of Increasing Opportunities

This series of draws indicates a growing focus on providing opportunities for diverse candidates. Before this week, the last draw occurred on September 19, inviting 4,000 candidates from the CEC, showcasing a slight increase in required scores compared to previous draws.

IRCC has been strategic in its approach, shifting its focus toward domestic draws and reducing the frequency of category-based selections for other programs. Since July, we have witnessed an increase in ITAs for CEC candidates, aligning with IRCC’s objective to meet its permanent resident targets while accommodating more local talent.

What is Express Entry?

For those unfamiliar, Express Entry is a dynamic application management system launched in 2015 to select skilled immigrants who can fill urgent labor market gaps. It manages applications for three main programs:

  • Federal Skilled Worker Program
  • Federal Skilled Trades Program
  • Canadian Experience Class (CEC)

Candidates are evaluated through the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS), which assesses factors such as work experience, age, language proficiency, education, and occupation. Higher scores increase your chances of receiving an ITA in future draws.

The Advantage of Category-Based Selections

In May 2023, IRCC introduced category-based selection draws aimed at addressing specific labor shortages. The categories include:

  • Healthcare
  • Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM)
  • Trades
  • Transport
  • Agriculture and Agri-food
  • French language proficiency

These category-based draws typically feature lower CRS cut-off scores, making them an attractive option for many candidates. However, applicants must still be in the Express Entry pool, and having a higher CRS score remains a significant advantage.
